# Houston Texans 2026 Outlook: Everybody Loves the Defense, Nobody Has Graded It

*Published 2026-09-03 — MissedTakes*

DeMeco Ryans' [Houston Texans](/nfl/teams/texans) have made the playoffs three straight years — 10-7 in 2023, 10-7 in 2024, then 12-5 in 2025 — and the field has responded by treating them as a settled thing. That shows up in the shape of the punditry we hold on them. Our database has 125 Texans wide receiver takes and three about their safeties. It has 102 depth-chart calls and 18 win-total calls, and among the 2026 win-total calls, not one is an under.

Below, every unit, with what has actually been said and how similar calls have graded.

## Quarterbacks

There is no competition, and nobody is pretending otherwise. Jared Koch, writing in August, put it flatly: "When it comes to the Texans' first and second quarterbacks on the depth chart, there are no doubts about who will be the two filling things out" — [C.J. Stroud](/nfl/players/c-j-stroud) and [Davis Mills](/nfl/players/davis-mills), with Koch expecting those two to be the only quarterbacks activated on game days.

The lone contrarian on file is CBS Sports' Douglas Clawson, whose bold prediction is that "Houston will send Stroud a message at some point in 2026 by benching him in favor of Davis Mills." That one is pending.

The history here is unkind, and specifically unkind to people who bet on Stroud's *upside* rather than his job. Eight graded Texans QB takes average 48 accuracy with a skill delta of **-70.91** — the worst mark of any position group on this roster. [Colin Cowherd](/pundits/colin-cowherd)'s "C.J. Stroud is a Pro Bowl level" [call](/opinions/3df3906e-8138-4a97-b8ea-b3deae08b1a2) graded 0 with -200 skill. [Sean Kerner](/pundits/sean-kerner)'s "Stroud should bounce back here in year three" [sleeper](/opinions/ec510a56-f0ae-4583-8e26-5b031d8d6d10) also scored 0 against a QB18 bar; Stroud finished QB21. [Rich Hribar](/pundits/rich-hribar) once [projected](/opinions/636fa042-c413-4d93-a89f-70931e21bbf0) 4,895 passing yards and 30.4 touchdowns; the accuracy scores were 52.27 and 31.58.

Meanwhile the boring calls cashed: [Pat Gustavson](/pundits/pat-gustavson) and [Brandon Carney](/pundits/brandon-carney), asked in February whether they saw any change at Houston quarterback, both said no and both [scored](/opinions/723c800d-fbd0-4e51-a09c-6ea168267741) 100 accuracy — with zero skill, because the naive answer was the same. [Walt](/pundits/walt) is the one with a number on the board for 2026: 3,600 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 240 fantasy points. That grades in January.

## The receiver room

The room's story is Jayden Higgins' season-ending ACL tear and the trade for [Kayshon Boutte](/nfl/players/kayshon-boutte). Frank Ammirante: "Boutte immediately slots into the No. 2 WR role with Jayden Higgins out for the season." [Andrew Erickson](/pundits/andrew-erickson) lists Boutte as a sleeper and [Jaylin Noel](/nfl/players/jaylin-noel) as a deep-league value. Koch dissents, expecting [Xavier Hutchinson](/nfl/players/xavier-hutchinson) or Noel to out-target him: "the expectation remains that Noel remains more involved on a weekly basis than Boutte."

On [Nico Collins](/nfl/players/nico-collins) there is no dissent at all — [Ralph Vacchiano](/pundits/ralph-vacchiano) ("Nico Collins is a No. 1 receiver"), Jared Dubin ("an elite No. 1 receiver"), [JP Acosta](/pundits/jp-acosta) ("closer to being a top five receiver than top 10"). That has been a good place to stand. [Richard Sherman](/pundits/richard-sherman)'s 2025 top-five-receiver [call](/opinions/ec43b02b-8e3a-4b2e-8c36-1839c9c52e3c) graded 75 accuracy with +133.33 skill; Erickson's [round-one sleeper call](/opinions/58b6b85b-eacc-4bf3-a205-bcc403d81bc2) graded 100 with +200. The specific-number versions fared worse: Erickson's 1,500-yard projection came in at 48.93 accuracy against an actual 1,117.

Across all 16 graded Texans WR takes, average accuracy is 48.6 with +19.99 skill — mediocre hit rate, but better than the naive guess.

## The running backs

[David Montgomery](/nfl/players/david-montgomery) as a bell cow is the most-repeated fantasy claim in this file. [Derek Brown](/pundits/derek-brown): "I think they're going to roll him right into the Joe Mixon role. Just absolutely ride him this year… I don't have any questions about who's getting the red zone work in Houston." [Nathan Jahnke](/pundits/nathan-jahnke) has him on "a clear path to his largest workload in years." FantasyPros calls him a "potential top-12 running back." The pushback is narrow: Erickson tags him a bust, and Evan Tarracciano concedes "I still view Montgomery as an RB2, but it is hard to deny that his upside is capped."

Worth flagging before you buy the consensus: Texans running back takes are the site's worst-scoring unit on this roster — eight graded, 34.4 average accuracy, **-39.58** skill. That is the fantasy-sleeper machine at work; Texans sleeper calls overall grade 20 accuracy on five graded takes. [Woody Marks](/nfl/players/woody-marks) draws one late-round endorsement (Kyle Zeigler, "RB4 price tag"). No fullback takes exist.

## The tight ends

[Dalton Schultz](/nfl/players/dalton-schultz) is being recycled as a sleeper by nearly everyone: Derek Brown ("could flirt with borderline TE1 production again"), Kurt Blakeway ("a path to a top-five finish if everything breaks right"), Jahnke ("the clear-cut lead tight end for Houston since 2023… a top sleeper option with Higgins' injury"), [Pat Fitzmaurice](/pundits/pat-fitzmaurice) more soberly at "midrange TE2." Jahnke also has rookie [Marlin Klein](/nfl/players/marlin-klein) starting the season as the second tight end.

None of it is graded yet. The site's only two settled Texans tight end takes are old mock-draft picks, averaging 36.9 accuracy.

## The offensive line

Thirty tackle takes and 21 guard takes sound like a lot until you notice most are mock-draft picks. The actual 2026 opinions are thin and unanimous: [Aireontae Ersery](/nfl/players/aireontae-ersery) at left tackle ("firmly established as the team's starter," with "the potential to finish 2026 as one of the NFL's top 20 tackles," per PFF's Gordon McGuinness), [Braden Smith](/nfl/players/braden-smith) at right tackle, [Wyatt Teller](/nfl/players/wyatt-teller) at left guard, [Ed Ingram](/nfl/players/ed-ingram) at right guard, and first-rounder [Keylan Rutledge](/nfl/players/keylan-rutledge) at center — a call made independently by Aaron Wilson, Kevin Patra, [Josh Edwards](/pundits/josh-edwards), [Gregg Rosenthal](/pundits/gregg-rosenthal), [Mike Renner](/pundits/mike-renner), [John Granato](/pundits/john-granato) and [Lance Zierlein](/pundits/lance-zierlein). Granato's version: "he's not gonna start ahead of Wyatt Teller. He's not gonna start ahead of Ingram. He's probably the center."

Depth-chart calls on this team grade 92.6 accuracy but **-5.56** skill across nine graded takes — high hit rate, no edge over simply assuming last year's answer.

## The defensive line

The unit everyone praises and almost nobody has put a checkable number on. Jordan Dajani calls [Will Anderson Jr.](/nfl/players/will-anderson-jr) "a favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year"; JB picked him for the award outright; Greg Auman says "don't be surprised if he takes another step to the 15-plus sack level in 2026." Koch expects [Tommy Togiai](/nfl/players/tommy-togiai) to improve on his DT2 role and predicts one of the NFL's best defensive lines. [Jadeveon Clowney](/nfl/players/jadeveon-clowney), per Arye Pulli, "can thrive as a third option on a dangerous defensive line."

The graded record is two defensive end takes (47.9 average accuracy) and ten defensive tackle takes (66.7, almost all mock picks). And the honors calls have been a bloodbath: all five graded Pro Bowl/All-Pro takes on Texans players scored **0**, including Acosta's second-team All-Pro [pick](/opinions/660e3494-2b0b-415e-beb7-9e3bf3464e30) of Anderson.

![How Texans takes have graded, by claim type](/posts/visuals/2369debb-5af9-43ea-b98f-88ab4786c7e6.png)

## The secondary

Three graded cornerback takes, average accuracy 0. One graded safety take, accuracy 0. That is the whole ledger.

The pending stuff is glowing — [Daniel Wade](/pundits/daniel-wade): "You have maybe the best corner in the league and [Derek Stingley](/nfl/players/derek-stingley-jr) out there"; Alex Kay notes Stingley, [Kamari Lassiter](/nfl/players/kamari-lassiter) and [Jalen Pitre](/nfl/players/jalen-pitre) "are not in danger of losing their jobs." But the graded version of that enthusiasm is Zierlein's [ranking](/opinions/1c26b6a1-52d1-47d2-b81d-25475d2de133) of Stingley as the league's second-best corner (0 accuracy, -33.33 skill, measured on interceptions, where he finished 18th) and two All-Pro picks that missed.

## Special teams

One take. Derek Brown [expects](/opinions/608f5ece-ca32-4dca-8a2f-e4535935b797) [Ka'imi Fairbairn](/nfl/players/ka-imi-fairbairn), last year's leader in fantasy points per game among kickers, to "easily repeat this feat in 2026." No punter, long-snapper or return-game takes exist on this team. That is not an oversight on our part; nobody said anything checkable.

## The rookie class

Ground truth from the 2026 draft: G Keylan Rutledge (1-26, Georgia Tech), DT [Kayden McDonald](/nfl/players/kayden-mcdonald) (2-36, Ohio State), TE Marlin Klein (2-59, Michigan), OL Febechi Nwaiwu (4-106), LB [Wade Woodaz](/nfl/players/wade-woodaz) (4-123), S [Kamari Ramsey](/nfl/players/kamari-ramsey) (5-141), WR [Lewis Bond](/nfl/players/lewis-bond) (6-204), LB [Aiden Fisher](/nfl/players/aiden-fisher) (7-243).

Nobody in our records mocked Rutledge to Houston. The pre-draft field kept putting tackles and defensive tackles at pick 28 — [Nick Shook](/pundits/nick-shook), Fitzmaurice and Derek Brown all hit 100 accuracy with Caleb Lomu there, and four separate pundits ([Renner](/opinions/f93a0d01-bf42-4298-aeea-be59185728ab), [Keith Sanchez](/pundits/keith-sanchez), [Ayrton Ostley](/pundits/ayrton-ostley), [Bucky Brooks](/pundits/bucky-brooks)) scored 95.76 with Peter Woods. Rosenthal had Rutledge going 30th, to Miami: 84.09.

Role calls on the class: Rutledge at center (near-unanimous), Klein as TE2 (Jahnke), Woodaz in "that LB3 role" and Fisher sneaking onto the 53 (Koch), Ramsey as "the next man up as the primary backup" behind Calen Bullock, Pitre and Reed Blankenship (Koch). On McDonald, we hold ten mock-draft calls and zero opinions about what he does in Houston.

## The overall outlook

Our win-total consensus tool returns nothing for 2026 — nothing has settled yet — so all we can show is the board itself. And the board has no unders on it.

![Every explicit 2026 Texans win projection on file](/posts/visuals/76cb4137-0181-4f0b-b690-dbb2cedeef5b.png)

Granato walked the schedule and landed on 16-1. Zierlein: "I can see two losses max." Moe Moton has Houston 13-4 and "bullying its way to the No. 1 seed." [Nick Wright](/pundits/nick-wright) has them 12-5 and "competing for the one seed." [Simon Hunter](/pundits/simon-hunter) says 11. Rosenthal, Renner, [Chad Millman](/pundits/chad-millman) and Seth Payne all took the over on 9.5; Derek Brown and Cowherd both say 10-plus.

Division: 44 takes, all Houston. Cowherd has said it at least six separate times ("their defense is like a notch above even Seattle's"). [Geoff Schwartz](/pundits/geoff-schwartz) is [betting](/opinions/40a7d504-2d67-4df8-8038-1fb1c4978e15) it at +110. [Mark Willard](/pundits/mark-magic-mark-willard), Ephraim Salaam, Matt Severance, [Rich Eisen](/pundits/rich-eisen) and [Jason McIntyre](/pundits/jason-mcintyre) are all on it too. Conference: McIntyre has the Texans winning the AFC; [Aaron Schatz](/pundits/aaron-schatz)'s FTN projections give them "about twice the amount of odds to win the Super Bowl as any other AFC team"; Schwartz calls Houston his Super Bowl bet.

Two cautions from the ledger. First, division-winner takes on this team grade **15 average accuracy across 20 graded** calls, with zero skill — Cowherd's career division-winner mark is 5.88 accuracy on 53 graded, Wright's is 12.5 on 14. Second, the AFC-champion tier is where Houston optimism goes to die: five graded conference-champion takes on the Texans, all scoring 0, including Renner's fifth-seed Super Bowl run and [Jourdan Rodrigue](/pundits/jourdan-rodrigue)'s Texans-over-Eagles pick. Playoff-berth calls, by contrast, grade 92.9 accuracy on 14 graded — and **-14.29** skill, because "the Texans make it again" is what the naive answer already said.

That is the honest summary of 2026 Texans punditry: the safe calls are safe, the aggressive ones have historically been wrong, and the defense everyone is buying has almost no graded track record behind it.
